A US$5-class starter board, good for learning embedded Linux/RTOS and useless as a desktop; check whether you have a 64M or a 256M/S before buying, since the images are completely incompatible. Community derivatives such as openwrt exist too (not listed as standard distro ids).

Distros

  • Buildroot Official Official V1/V2 Buildroot SDKs — flash and go, the steadiest system
  • Fedora Community Fedora 41 image (Fedora-V Force, ISCAS mirror)
  • Debian Community Fishwaldo/scpcom's sophgo-sg200x-debian, covering 256M/S
  • Ubuntu Community Ubuntu 22.04 community image (bassusteur)
  • Arch Linux RISC-V Community Community Arch image
  • Alpine Linux Community Community Alpine image (cwt)
  • NixOS Community Community-maintained with limited features
  • Yocto / OpenEmbedded Community meta-milkv layer
  • openEuler Community openEuler has a Duo image

Pitfalls

  • The 64MB Duo has too little RAM for the AI apps in V2 images; the vendor explicitly recommends V1 images for 64M boards
  • By default there is only a USB-NCM network interface (192.168.42.1) with no DHCP, so set a host IP in the same subnet; the root password is milkv
  • Mainline support is partial: minimal landed in 6.7, GPIO in 6.8, clock/SPI/I2C/MMC/USB in 6.9–6.10, and camera/VPU/NPU and some clocks are still under review
  • Duo 256M/S include an ARM Cortex-A53 core; RISC-V and ARM images are not interchangeable
  • There is no HDMI — even the Duo S only has MIPI DSI; add an adapter board to connect a screen
  • The Duo S has a BOOT switch; the wrong position blocks download/boot mode, and 5V/1A is enough power — don't force a fast charger into it
