The only board that works as a RISC-V workstation/server, at a completely different price and power level; good for 64-core parallel builds and CI runners, not for beginners. Community derivatives such as opencloudos exist too (not listed as standard distro ids).

Distros

  • RevyOS Official Currently the vendor's recommended system; RevyOS 20260504 ships pioneer/pisces firmware and images
  • Fedora Official Milk-V's docs use Fedora 38 as the install example; Fedora RISC-V supports SG2042
  • openEuler Community The openEuler RISC-V SIG supports SG2042 for server scenarios
  • openKylin Community openKylin has a RISC-V server image
  • deepin Community deepin RISC-V port
  • Debian Partial debian-ports has base riscv64 packages but no official Pioneer image
  • Ubuntu Partial No Canonical image; build the rootfs yourself

Pitfalls

  • The Image area of Milk-V's Download page is empty now (moved to RevyOS) — don't look for system images there
  • Choose memory carefully: pick RDIMM/UDIMM from the official DDR support list or DDR training fails and it won't boot
  • It needs standard ATX 24-pin plus CPU 8-pin power, and a cooler is mandatory (120W typical)
  • No onboard display output — add a PCIe GPU; some cards show nothing during LinuxBoot/U-Boot
  • Firmware upgrades (LinuxBoot/EDK2 + MCU) can brick the board; follow the official order exactly
  • Early batches have ASM2824 PCIe switch compatibility issues — check the buglist first
