The JH7110 board with the widest ecosystem and distro coverage, and one of the best first RISC-V boards; watch for firmware differences between batches. Community derivatives such as openwrt/dietpi/guix exist too (not listed as standard distro ids).

Distros

  • Debian Official StarFive's official Debian 202510 (trixie + Wayland desktop); mainline Debian 13's official installer also works
  • Ubuntu Official StarFive's official Ubuntu 24.04.3 (202510) plus Canonical's jh7110 preinstalled image
  • Fedora Community One of the Fedora RISC-V official test boards
  • openSUSE Community openSUSE Ports has riscv64; the site returns 403, so the direct link is unverified
  • Arch Linux RISC-V Community archriscv provides a VF2 rootfs/ISO
  • Alpine Linux Community riscv64 minirootfs works
  • Armbian Community Armbian officially supports VisionFive 2
  • Gentoo Community The Gentoo wiki has a dedicated VisionFive 2 page
  • NetBSD Community NetBSD/riscv supports JH7110
  • OpenBSD Community OpenBSD/riscv64 supports JH7110
  • FreeBSD Community FreeBSD has JH7110 support
  • NixOS Community Community-maintained; build your own image
  • Buildroot Official The StarFive SDK is Buildroot-based and produces SPL/U-Boot/FIT
  • Yocto / OpenEmbedded Community Community meta-starfive layer
  • openEuler Community The openEuler RISC-V SIG provides images
  • deepin Community deepin RISC-V port
  • openKylin Community openKylin has a VF2 image

Pitfalls

  • U-Boot/SPL lives in QSPI flash and images are tightly bound to firmware: images after 202310 need U-Boot >= v3.1.5 in QSPI, otherwise flash u-boot-spl.bin.normal.out + visionfive2_fw_payload.img first
  • Boot order is QSPI → SD/eMMC/NVMe; a wrong DIP switch boots from the wrong medium
  • There are failure reports for Debian 202510 on older v1.2 boards; upgrade the firmware first or use mainline Debian
  • StarFive's official Debian 202510 can't boot from USB; mainline Debian 13 can, but without HDMI/GPU/VPU drivers
  • VisionFive 2 Lite uses different U-Boot/DTB from the standard board — images are not interchangeable
  • eMMC/SD boot has known errata; prefer NVMe or a good SD card
