Bottom line

If you want a proper Unix-like system with official images, FreeBSD is the most solid non-Linux option on RISC-V.

Upstream
riscv64 is an official Tier 2 architecture (14.x/15.x/16.x are all planned as Tier 2), with formal RELEASE install images and the supported platforms listed in the hardware notes.

Pitfalls

  • Tier 2: the security team doesn't promise timely fixes, and new hardware support lags
  • Supported platforms are only Unmatched/Unleashed/VisionFive 2/QEMU/Spike — newer domestic boards are essentially absent
  • riscv64sf (soft float) was dropped after 13.5; don't follow old docs
  • GPU/wireless driver coverage on RISC-V is far behind x86/arm64, which limits the desktop experience
